Asheville Newborn Photographer

As a professional photographer with years of experience in capturing newborn photos, I have seen the excitement and joy that parents feel as they prepare for their newborn’s first photo session. However, I also understand the anxiety that comes with preparing for such an important event, especially for new parents. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help parents prepare for their newborn photo session.

Schedule your session in advance.

It’s best to schedule your newborn photo session in advance, ideally during your second trimester of pregnancy. This way, you can ensure that you have a spot reserved with your preferred photographer and have time to plan the details of your session.

Choose the right time.

Over the years I have learned that the right time is closer to the 3-5 week mark. This allows for mama and baby to bond a bit more and for a feeding routine to be somewhat established. Typically, baby acne starts to subside by week 3, as well. Additionally, babies tend to have a bit more chubbiness on them at this point. Babies from day 1 to about 6 weeks are doing all the newborn baby things and the experience is as important as capturing the newness and moments of this milestone. I have experienced mom’s in a more restful and confident demeanor by pushing this back a week or two.

Feed your baby before the session.

A full baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby means better experience. It’s recommended to feed your baby right before your session, so they are comfortable and content during our time together. However, babies don’t always march to our tune so please don’t feel pressured to have a feeding entirely completed prior- it is so easy to flow into the session however we need to. Also this may lend to nursing imagery if this is also something you envision for your gallery.

Make sure the whole family is ready.

Newborn photoshoots can include family photos if discussed in advance. We definitely will talk prior to your experience to collaborate on styling with the family, you and baby. What’s great about having everyone ready to go, is its simple for me to start with other dynamics in the family if mama needs more time to herself at the beginning of the session, because let’s be clear mom is leading the entire “getting ready” and leaving herself last. So, having everyone else ready to go actually can be nice to have a moment.

Be prepared for breaks.

Newborns have their own schedule, and they might need to take breaks during the photoshoot. So, be prepared for breaks to feed, change diapers or comfort your baby. We’ll follow Babe’s lead and I will achieve more than you realize during our time together.
